Yesterday, in the great city of St. Paul, the 53rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade stepped off 5th and Sibley at high noon. The day was chilly, but sunny, and close to 40,000 of our closest friends came decked out in their finest green attire! It is a day for families, a day for traditions, and a day to celebrate our heritage. The tradition began in 1967. “The very 1st parade was whipped into shape in just two months, and drew crowds 6 deep on the sidewalks” (Irish Gazette, March 1991). TWO MONTHS?? The St. Patrick’s Day parade and Association has grown leaps and bounds since that very 1st parade 53 years ago. It now has close to 75 active members, and many events and parades throughout the year! So, as the sun goes down on this St. Patrick’s day, the St. Patrick’s Association never stops working. We now rest for a few weeks then draw for our trip for two to Ireland, then we plan our summer parades. Our work is never done! Slainte!
